Re: Gondolin music

Hi, thanks for your answers. It is good to read them. Elaran, what you say about ‘truth / real’ vs. ‘fantasy’ - that is indeed the crucial point. It’s so much at the heart of our thinking that most people don’t even see it. Following people like Stephan Hoeller, I’ve come to adapt using the terms ‘t...

Re: Tolkien as "Sci-Fi"

Maybe it’s not the first thing you’d think of, but I found Carl Sagan’s novel “Contact” very thought-provoking, especially from someone like Sagan who is famous for his skepticism. It’s the same story from which that movie with Jodie Foster was made; but the movie lacks the almost Leaf-by-Niggle-lik...

Re: The Elokh from Mars & their rockets

I can only repeat Meneldur's Carl Sagan quote: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence".

Stating that two Italian guys think otherwise does not amount to extraordinary evidence.

Moderation note: I split off Mildir's posts about Mars to a separate topic in 'The Edge' [link] for being offtopic.

Re: Tolkien as "Sci-Fi"

I'm an odd one here: I've never had that overarching 'disbelief' that one is supposed to suspend in order to properly enjoy a story. Rather, to me everything perceptible is an "instance of itself", so it is very easy for me to enter into a story. Exactly! Well, it’s the same for me, apart from that...

Re: The Basics on Gnosticism

Hi Neophyte, I am not an expert in 'regular gnosticism' either, but to summarise my understanding: The gnostic view is that Jehovah is indeed not the true God but a demiurge. Here's a description of (one of the) the Gnostic creation myths, The Divine Sophia A short summary of that would be: In the b...

Re: The Basics on Gnosticism

I, for one, don't think he was a deity at all: there is a wealth of historical evidence confirming that he was one of the Elokh, a warlike people which once inhabited Mars. Does that sound impossible to you ? :D Have you ever seen what Babylonian sculptors used to depict ? ;) :hmm: Well, what do YO...

Re: Tolkien as "Sci-Fi"

btw, not sure if you (Mildir) know, but Tolkien did attempt to write a kind of SF story - though it's of course entangled with the rest of his Legendarium: The Notion Club Papers.

Re: Tolkien as "Sci-Fi"

Re-reading this topic after several years, I must admit that the idea that I have of "contemporary science fiction" is probably hugely simplified. We had a stack of old SF paperbacks at home, which I all devoured when I was in my teens. They were mostly from the 'Golden Age': authors like Isaac Asim...

@Dave, very well spoken as usual! First, I would say do not worry too much whether the non-ordinary experiences you describe are "inappropriate". I’ll just add here that the same goes for me, but as I mentioned earlier it’s good to keep in mind that your experiences might be difficult to communicate...

No, Lúthien, I didn't want to disturb him. :D
I just hoped he might pass by soon, but I think it's better to let fate decide... :)
Having known him for some time, I think that it’s more than likely he’s engrossed in something. I know because I’m like him in that respect :)

Edit: Q.E.D. :D

Re: Do Republicans and pedophile priests share the same vile sexual morality.

Looks like in some respects I'm more American than you... :D Possibly ... I’m in any case not American at all, because I’m a Europeana like you :) Have you ever listened to any song by Enya? :) I suspect you already know her. I do, yes. I find their lyrics interesting, but the music as such does no...

Re: Do Republicans and pedophile priests share the same vile sexual morality.

Good point re. worshipping! I’ve always felt a distaste for that particular blind dedication and “I’m not worthy” attitude... any person, or indeed any deity who would love that sort of grovelling must be a jerk indeed. Funny, but I was just thinking about this today in another context: I love many ...

I think that any attempt to oust the current US president will be met with enthusiasm from our American forum members - at least the ones I know :) And the same goes for me.
