A Bereth nîr! (poem about Nienna)

Post by Lúthien » Fri Nov 02, 2012 4:33 pm

EDIT - moved this to the poesy forum from Aulë's forge ... my bad :)

I've been planning to finish this poem for much too long. It's at times unsettling how difficult it is to turn myself towards a task that I am not at that time involved in. And yet, when I finally start on it, it is usually done very fast so that I then wonder why it took me such an awfully long time to start on the thing.
But enough about that - I like the result so far, though I may have overseen some grammatical or stylistic points that will be pointed out by the good folk of Parendili in the coming days.

The poem has the form of a kind of hymn, so some verses are repeated. It is built up in a mirrored fashion, where only in the middle part Nienna is addressed in the second person. The rest is more distant, "about her" in the third person.

A Bereth nîr!

Ú-osto aen i chiril vith
hiril i nîr, údog nûr aen
Ú-'rogo aen i dhîn dhúatheb
ai lom, eglan, e nesta phain

Sui rhoss hilivren sî nannol
i nîr gelebrin miriar
Vi thîr úlal dan vilui
i 'lîn i chin vith thiliar

Tôl lu aen, hen gevedithog
ir estel gen awarthannen
i 'alu dîn gen pathratha
ir lend gîn annan methannen

A Bereth nîr! Heryn hael!
dorthad ned annûn chae dholen
na esgar ui gyrol estel
na doled echui eden

Ir phain adhadwennir na bost
i dhîn nestadren pelia
ne rhîw, i goll dîn toba phain
i chiril vithren tiria

Sui rhoss hilivren sî nannol
i nîr gelebrin miriar
Vi thîr úlal dan vilui
i 'lîn i chin vith thiliar

Ú-osto aen i chiril vith
hiril i nîr, údog nûr aen
Ú-'rogo aen i dhîn dhúatheb
ai lom, eglan, e nesta phain

O Queen of Tears!

Do not fear the grey lady
the lady of tears she may be, but she does not bring sorrow
Do not fear the shadowy silence
those who are weary, forsaken, healing (it heals) all

Like glittering rain they are falling
the silvery tears, shining like gems
in her serious yet loving face
the gleam in her light grey eyes sparkles

The hour may come that you will meet her
when all hope has abandoned you
and her blessedness will fill you
when your long journey has come to an end

Oh queen of tears! Lady wise!
Living in the far hidden West
at the eternal shore you renew hope
for the coming of a new beginning

When all returns to a halt
the healing silence spreads
in winter, her mantle covers everything
the Grey Lady keeps watch

Like glittering rain they are falling
the silvery tears, shining like gems
in her serious yet loving face
the gleam in her light grey eyes sparkles

Do not fear the grey lady
the lady of tears she may be, but she does not bring sorrow
Do not fear the shadowy silence
those who are weary, forsaken, healing (it heals) all

Here's a recording that I made just now (you can hear Kizmo, the resident cat. purring at the end :) )

I like it!

P.S. Thanks for the translation, or I'd be saying ¿Qué dice? :-)

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful! If it is okay, I would like to add this to the collection of poems and hymns that I use for prayer and meditation. I will, of course, credit you as the author.

thank you!
Sure, you can use it if you like. I'm glad if someone can use it like this.

Incidentally, If you're just using it privately for your own practice / rituals, there's no need to credit me.
That'd be more for if you would like to quote it somewhere else, I'd think?

Actually, it's my habit to credit all authors of passages, or creators of spiritual disciplines and techniques, that I have included in my Parma Tindomellion (Book of Morning-Star); the work which is a compendium of the practices and techniques which make up my sacred way. I do this, in the event that my book, somehow, survives my lifetime and is made use of by future generations. In this way, others can be rightfully recognized for their contributions.

This is really wonderful Luthien - lots to "digest" there, for sure! I will reread this again and reflect more when I can!
