Nienna, again

Post by Lúthien » Mon Jan 02, 2012 7:15 pm

This image isn't finished yet, but it emerged so quickly that I wanted to share it in this stage, I started drawing it in the train to work today, and have worked half an hour on it tonight.
I saw it during the meditation I did for Isilringare, some weeks ago. This is the text from the notes that I took afterwards:
(...) and then she walked me back through her halls. Then I had some really beautiful and detailed views of parts of her halls .. it was quite amazing actually. There was a stair, winding down in a long arc outside of the building, the rock was sort of black and shiny, and there were white shrubs - leafless now - growing on it, like ornaments almost. At one vantage point we had a great view of Ithil - the moon - and the slope of that hill was adorned with many of a sort of white feathery plants, that all seemed to reach out to the Moon to greet her. "here you can go back easily" she told me, and so it was.

Wow, you made this on a train? I am impressed! :-) Of course this is coming from someone who cannot draw so well hehe! I do better with a crochet hook ;-) Thanks for sharing, this is a great rendition!!

well, maybe I should explain that I didn't put up an easel in the train and used oil or acrylic paint on a canvas for this one :)
It's made in a paint program called Artrage. I use that quite a lot, it's good and very handy because you can work with (partly transparent) layers, which is of course impossible in traditional painting. It works very well together with a graphic tablet; it's almost like using real paint.
I use it for many illustrations like this.

This is a lovely drawing, Melleth. There are some key similarities here between you rendering of Nienna's hall and what I've seen on my journeys to it. I have not much regarded upper levels, but do see them from the surrounding courtyard. The fence you've drawn comes through to me as a row of arched 'windows' on the lowest level of the hall. I do hope to make more drawings or paintings before too long; it's been awhile.

thanks :)

Here's the third version: I think I stop working on it now, because it feels finished enough. I could go on a long time detailing those plants ever more but that probably would not contribute a great deal.

Your drawing is beautiful. The plants somehow make me think of memories of trees, if that makes sense.

I, too, just love how this has developed, with more detail! It is a beautiful vision of Nienna's halls, really!

Great digital artwork! :)

I just wanted to mention that to both Dineen and I, when we saw your first picture, the tree-objects reminded us strongly of hoarfrost.
