Teleri Surfers

Post by Lomelindo »

I wonder, were there surfers among the Teleri. They spent so much time close to the sea that I can imagine the evolution of recreational activities to combat boredom.

Maybe it's why the Teleri are also named Falmari "Wave folk".

If not surfboards they surely the Teleri would have at least bodysurfed for fun. Maybe that is where we get such names as Falmarin "foam-rider"???

It seems probable.

Wherever you have naturally athletic people and a surf of any appreciable height, you tend to have body-surfing at minimum.

Suilad ~

I'm on my phone, so this post won't have links, etc, because all my stuff's on my laptop.

I think it's extremely likely, given that Eldarin ingenuity is, well, just damn better than ours. Even if the will to make a surfing device didn't rise from necessity, one can only stare at waves for so long before gaining the awareness needed to think 'if I take a tree and do this, this, this, this, and this, I can {totally} coast atop the waves. {Du~uude!}'

(Please forgive the levity. Not downplaying the idea. I just need to laugh right now so that I don't cry.)

I can see this as an idea the Teleri would share with their Solosimpi neighbors, and if the tools, etc were lacking for the technical development, the Noldor in Kôr would be all about it, once the idea was presented.

A handful of the Imaginal journeys I've made carried the affirmation that these three groups often collaborated and shared their respective skill sets. The Noldoli would have a bird's eye view of the shore dwellers, and there's little that would keep them from traveling to Alqualondë and surrounding areas to say 'We've brought tools that you can use for building, we want to know how to fish.'

I think too that the dynamic of body surfing would be quickly followed by the idea to design and make the board.

Imagine Elven surfer dudes?! It would be like that surfer guy on the news a while back:

As an aside - it’s intriguing that “men who surf” are more likely to be labelled as “dude” than other men 🤔

Yes, the changes in the term over time are interesting: [link].
