invocation (Debussy / Lamartine)

Post by Lúthien »

Debussy is one of my favourite composers. I found his choral work "Evocation" some time ago and next to the music (which is always magic with Debussy)  I found the lyrics of this song fitting for the spirit of IV. The work sets a poem by Alphonse Marie Louis de Lamartine to music, or rather the second half of it because it's quite a long poem (full version available here).

The text is a lyrical call to the soul to find joy in the beauty of God's creation. The translation below is by Google (rather clumsy), but the music speaks for itself.

Élevez-vous, voix de mon âme
Avec l'aurore, avec la nuit !
Élancez-vous comme la flamme,
Répandez-vous comme le bruit !
Flottez sur l'aile des nuages,
Mêlez-vous aux vents, aux orages,
Au tonnerre, au fracas des flots;
L'homme en vain ferme sa paupière;
L'hymne éternel de la prière
Trouvera partout des échos !

Ne craignez pas que le murmure
De tous ces astres à la fois,
Ces mille voix de la nature,
Étouffent votre faible voix !
Tandis que les sphères mugissent,
Et que les sept cieux retentissent
Des bruits roulants, en son honneur,
L'humble écho que l'âme réveille
Porte en mourant à son oreille
La moindre voix qui dit : Seigneur !

Élevez-vous dans le silence
A l'heure où dans l'ombre du soir
La lampe des nuits se balance,
Quand le prêtre éteint l'encensoir;

Porte celui dont il est plein;

Monter soudain comme l'encens;

Survivra jusqu'au dernier jour;

(English translation by Google translate)

Rise up, voice of my soul
With the dawn, with the night!
Soar like a flame,
Spread like a mighty sound!
Float on the wing of the clouds,
Mingle with the winds, the storms,
With the thunder, with the crash of the waves;
The man in vain closes his eyelid;
The eternal hymn of prayer
Will find echoes everywhere!

Don't be afraid of the whisper
Of all these stars at once,
These thousand voices of nature,
Muffle your weak voice!
While the spheres roar,
And let the seven skies ring
Rolling noises, in his honour,
The humble echo that the soul awakens
Carry while dying to his ear
The slightest voice that says: Lord!

Rise in silence
At the hour when in the shade of the evening
The lamp of the nights swings,
When the priest extinguishes the censer;
Rise to the edge of the waves
In these deep loneliness
Where God reveals himself to faith!
Sing in my funeral hours:
Love, there is no darkness,
No loneliness with you!

I'm just a thought,
The universe is dead in my heart,
And under this icy ash
I found only the Lord.
Whether it illuminates or confuses my path,
My heart, in tears or joy,
Carry the one of which it is full;
So the wave rolls an image,
And of the nights the last cloud
Carry the dawn in her bosom.

How sweet to see his thought,
Before looking for his accents,
In cadenced divine meters,
Rise suddenly like incense;
To see his timid praises,
As on the harp of angels,
Bloom in sounds worthy of the heavens,
And to the eternal gates
Rise on their own wings
With a harmonious flight!

One day, however, oh my lyre,
One day your voice will be dulled!
You will regret this madness
With which you were drunk under my fingers:
The years will tarnish this ice
where nature traces you
The wonders of the holy of holies!
Time, which withers what it touches,
Will delight the sounds on my mouth
And the images under my hands.

You won't spill my soul anymore
In waves of harmony and love,
But the feeling that ignites me
Will survive to the last day;
Like those arid peaks
Whose age has stripped away the wrinkles
Of their shadow and their echoes,
But who in their sides without greenery
keep a murmuring wave
And whose sky feeds the waves.

Ah!  when my fragile memory,
Like an urn from which the wave fled,
Will have lost these songs of glory
May your God inspire you today,
Of your failing harmony
Don't blush, my genius!
When your string would only have one sound,
Faithful harp, still sing
The God my youth worships,
Because its name is a hymn!

I don't know if it's me who is biased... but really, in some points it reminds the sound of Howard Shore...
Which makes me think Debussy might have been good at describing Tolkien through music...
Our myths may be misguided, but they steer however shakily towards the true harbour, while materialistic 'progress' leads only to a yawning abyss and the Iron Crown of the power of evil. (J.R.R. Tolkien)

I agree. Debussy wrote one opera, Pelleas et Melisande set to a libretto of Maurice Maeterlinck, which has the same peculiar evocative, haunting quality as seen in Tolkien.

It’s rather a long listen (2 hours 35 min) but well worth it … I just noticed the famous 1942 recording is available on YT 😄

Maurice Ravel might also have done a good job, though he was not so spiritually inclined.
