Sailboats

Sailboats
by Rowan Elensír
The waves do more than whisper today ~
For the wind is strong and high.
Out where the waters deepen to blue,
billowing sails are hoisted high.

Out in the bay, they turn and tack ~
Gliding forward, pitching back.

Proud curving sails shimmer ~
Emerald, crimson, sapphire, silver, gold.
From this shore how they beckon,
herald’s pennons do we behold.

Seeking a full wind, they are ~
These brilliant standards sailing past.
  The boats, like horses, for steersmen strong;
A lance upraised, advancing, in every stalwart mast.

And at their head, a schooner stands ~
Captain, General, a master for this fleet.

        Wond’rous may their travels be,
with joyous return, and victory ~
With tales told well, of Ulmo’s Realm ~
        The great, eternal Sea!
I Aear cân ven na mar ~ 'The Sea calls us Home.'

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

Outstanding!  Great imagery.

Why, thank you!  :)

As Rowan was speaking these words to me, I was wishing that I had brought my camera along, so that I could have provided a photo of the boats that had driven his inspiration.  However, it'd detract from the imagery.  This one took awhile to get down on paper,  because most of these separate ideas ~ the color of the sails, the resemblance to an assembled army, the natural elements ~ all came to him at once.  We looked up from writing the part about the 'brilliant standards,' and there she was ~ The Manitou.  Poetic license is great, but seeing the things that inspire is wonderful, indeed!

This one was certainly a labor of love, and we're glad that you like it.

Truly beautiful. Those whispering waves really do conjure up the sea-longing for me.

I have to agree that this is a VERY good poem; evocative and stirring.  I enjoyed reading it very much.  Thank you, Eruannlass.
