Experimenting with unnatural lightening ...

It turns out that, in the Cycles raytracing rendering engine of Blender, you can manipulate the light using the material & rendering nodes. For example: in nature, the light intensity falls off with the inverse square of the distance: something two times as far away is illuminated four times less bright.
If you want to create an illustration of the Trees from JRR Tolkien's Silmarillion, this is a bit of a problem: for the light of the Two Trees was supposed to illuminate maybe not all of Aman, but at least the central portion of it. If that light would have followed the same sort of fall-off laws, even when Corollaire would have been unbearably brightly lit, the rest would still be way too dark.

Enter the constant light fall-off option in said nodes - among other things, it's possible to separate the light that the camera sees directly from light that's bounced off diffuse surfaces. So, the "reflected" light can be routed via a constant intensity fall-off route while the direct camera light can be left in the default quadratic fall-off position. This has the overall effect that the emitted light that illuminates the world around the tree doesn't weaken with the distance. It still casts shadows, of course, so eventually the circle of light is still somewhat limited. But that's OK. The direct camera-light cannot be done that way because it would completely oversaturate the image, leaving only washed-out white "holes"; but with that light following a regular path it works well.

This is just a very rough generated landscape with one grass texture, and a tree with a handful of leaves - just to try the concept.
And Telperion, of course, with just leaves - no flowers.

These filters match what I've seen shamanically when I've received Valaric information.

I think you're on the right track.

Facebook: the intellectual and spiritual gravitational singularity of the Internet. :-) Well, probably one of many, but it's one of the most extreme (IMO). Glad I deleted my accounts there (both of them).

You are absolutely right of course. That's what it is.
But it is also (still) a way to contact some people - quite a few that I know react earlier on there than on a private email.

But I'm also in a constant state of annoyment if I'm on there. I find myself oftentimes taunting people a bit - more than I'd want to. They really act so dumb I'm that context! I feel like a cross between a policewoman and a schoolteacher there most of the time :)

Maybe they'll throw me off someday for violating their guidelines. I create lots of nonsense pages and nonexisting confusing information just to have some fun ... and admittedly: that IS fun sometimes ...

Added simple z-depth based 'fog' (cycles has no volumetric fog yet) and a bit of glare to the luminous leaves of Telperion. This does provide a bit more depth feel.

I have been working on yet another image of the Trees - I feel like Niggle, forever working on the same picture. But that's OK, because it is the most central image and there is much to explore within it yet.

I want to capture the feel of what the place looks to me - especially the odd quality of the light, which does not diminish with distance as usual in an inverse square manner, but much slower - or else the Trees would have to be so bright that it makes no sense.
This is a regular painting, not a 3D Blender image. It's not yet finished still; I've had too little time lately to work much on it - usually only a quick ten minutes on the train, not much more.
It's not finished. But I'd like to share it nonetheless.
