Blind Guardian

Post by LostBoy »

Anyone here a heavy metal fan?

For a long time, Blind Guardian was my favorite band - largely because they put out a Silmarillion concept album. Yep, you read that right. You can find the whole album here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMcBOvOuhoY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you don't have time for that, or you're not really into heavy metal and need something to get you hooked, just look up their song "Nightfall". Hands down - catchiest chorus EVER. It was the first song of theirs I ever heard and it's actually what got me into metal, so maybe it will do the same for you :)

I am an old school metal chick hehe. I will say that I rather like the classics more than newer material but there are some exceptions. I like some of Blind Guardian's material as well as others in what I see as a similar genre. My favorite of this genre is Leaves' Eyes. I like some songs of Nightwish too.

I'm more of a Tool/MJK fan myself, which many classify as an alt-metal band rather than heavy metal per se. Someone formerly in IV mentioned Blind Guardian to me some years ago, but after listening, I just couldn't get into their material. To me, there is a stylistic mismatch between the heavy metal genre and the Legendarium, though obviously others feel differently or bands such as Blind Guardian wouldn't exist.

I figured it a good idea to share my favorites with Nightwish and Leaves' Eyes hehe!

Nightwish - Sleeping Sun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpehI7qHRZE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Leaves' Eyes: Hard time deciding so here are 3 favorites hehe!
Vinland Saga - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfsmuwXNnVA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Dream - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ykqu_JuYt8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
My Destiny - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b15yaPYNDRU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (Love the video for this too)

I might want to share a link that had all types of music inspired by Tolkien's work - http://tolkien-music.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Found a couple of other interesting things though:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Works_insp ... R._Tolkien" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmKD7zyysGE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - 10 Underground Metal Bands inspired by Tolkien
http://litreactor.com/columns/lord-of-t ... etal-music" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And that reminded me - Christopher Lee (a complete Tolkien fan who played Saruman in the movies) recorded a metal album that I understand is pretty good - I hope I can be half as cool at that age if I am still alive, he is a legend.

Not metal - but I love them, and influenced by Tolkien (amongst many things but their name rules)
Narsilion - here is a sample, Winter Elven Dream: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gdIp3wK9PY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I love Blind Guardian. The Nightfall in Middle earth album sent shivers down my spine.

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost."

No sign of life did flicker
In floods of tears she cried
"All hope's lost it can't be undone
They're wasted and gone"
"Save me your speeches
I know (They blinded us all)
What you want
You will take it away from me
Take it and I know for sure
The light she once brought in
Is gone forevermore"
Like sorrowful seaguls they sang
"(We're) lost in the deep shades
The misty cloud brought
(A wailing when beauty was gone
Come take a look at the sky)
Monstrous it covered the shore
Fearful into the unknown"
Quietly it crept in new horror
Insanity reigned
And spilled the first blood
When the old king was slain
Nightfall
Quietly crept in and changed us all
Nightfall
Quietly crept in and changed us all
Nightfall
Immortal land lies down in agony
"How long shall we
Mourn in the dark
the bliss and the beauty
Will not return
Say farewell to sadness and grief
Though long and hard the road may be"
But even in silence I heard the words
"An oath we shall swear
By the name of the one
Until the world's end
It can't be broken"
Just wondering how
I can still hear these voices inside
The doom of the Noldor drew near
The words of a banished king
"I swear revenge"
Filled with anger aflamed our hearts
Full of hate full of pride
We screamed for revenge
Nightfall
Quietly crept in and changed us all
Nightfall
Quietly crept in and changed us all
Nightfall
Immortal land lies down in agony
"Vala he is that's what you said
Then your oath's been sworn in vain
(But) freely you came and
You freely shall depart
(So) never trust the northern winds
Never turn your back on friends"
"Oh I'm heir of the high lord!"
"You better don't trust him"
The enemy of mine
Isn't he of your kind and
Finally you may follow me
Farewell
He said
Nightfall
Quietly crept in and changed us all
Nightfall
Quietly crept in and changed us all
Nightfall
Immortal land lies down in agony
Back to where it all began
“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
