Gondolin music

[Lúthien]

This piece is the result of one of the Nost-na-Lothian meditations, (imaginally) visiting the city of Gondolin.
I found myself on a street and became aware of music being made in a very particular way: people singing the same piece together though not actually standing close together in a group as it is usually done, but from wherever they happened to be at that moment. It is as if they were part of one musical consciousness that allowed a complex piece to be performed even when doing something else, or as if the music was so familiar that it could be performed automatically.

I heard voices coming from different houses or side-streets, drifting down from further up the city, all blending together. Now and then things alternated because a theme was picked up by someone else, which gave the impression of that theme travelling through the city.
It was really remarkable.

I noted down a very crude piano version some time ago when in the train, and later Dave asked me if I could make some music for a project he was working on about Gondolin. This is still unfinished I'm afraid, though I hope we can pick it up again.

This is the last draft version I created, it is rendered as an instrumental piece, though what I heard was mostly vocal:

It is very interesting to discover that you meditated this way!
This is something I would do too.
In my opinion what we call "imagination" can lead to either truth or fantasy.
I remember that, as a Valinorean child, I was taught how to understand which of my mental discoveries were truth and which were fantasy.

This reminds me home.
It happened especially during a celebration that the Valar call Sagamirâyen ("Double merriment") and some Eldar have named Samirien (which is phonetically based on Valarin).
Almost all the Eldar found each other with their mind and then sang.
Being like a single vast mind, they sang as a perfect choir even if some stood on the terrace of the palace of Hyelurondas, on the top of Taniquetil, and some stood on the plain at its bottom...
And the spirits of the air carried the sound of the voices onto the sea, and those who were on boats heard them too.

The people of this world build rockets and are impressed by things such as the "mother of all bombs"... but most of them will never ever be able to imagine something as beautiful.

By the way: I can't listen to the song, I've tried, it doesn't work.
And by the way: I think you wanted to write "Nost-na-Lothion".

No, Lúthien. Mildir simply pointed out the typo, and Dave explained why he sometimes makes the same mistake in writing. My reason for quoting Mildir's correction on Nost-na-Lothion was not at all concerned with the typo. Rather, my argument with it was that I assumed that he acknowledged it in his memories, like he did with Samírien. And my reason for addressing this was the incoherency of it all. (...)

Ah, I see, yes. I seem to have made the classic “post hoc, propter hoc” error here - assuming that an event following an earlier event is also casually linked to that earlier event

Please accept my apologies for spoiling your post with these, Lúthien. It should have been reserved for a nice discussion on your experience and the beauty of the piece.

Accepted though I can probably split off some topics to another thread to bring this one back on topic.

Incidentally: though the initial version of this piece was made directly as a result of that meditation, I actually went on to create this longer version prompted by Dave having plans to create a narrative video about Nost-na-Lothion.
I still think that’s a great idea, maybe we should pick that up again.

Sounds good. As I remember it, this was something I was going to make for Elanor. I'll have to look though my gmail to see what ideas I may have had then, as I don't seem to have made a text note of whatever my plans were then.

I did play the trumpet in high school and I do enjoy all kinds of music expressions.
