I've never colored a mandala before but I'd like to give it a try.

It depends on the mandala you choose as to how fine of a point your drawing instrument needs to be.

Crayons-- cheap, widely available in a broad variety of colors. Cheaper still if you don't use Crayola brand. You can sharpen these after a fashion.

Colored pencils -- the inexpensive ones generally sold for kid's school supplies allow you to have a finer point than crayons. The colors tend to be much less intense than crayons though because the wax component is much harder and the pigment just isn't as concentrated in these. You can find more artist quality pencils at art and hobby shop supply stores that can give you a more intense color experience as well as the ability to blend colors. Watercolor pencils is one such variety I believe. Some are more "chalk" pastel type to give stronger pigment.

Markers-- broad variety available in various qualities (artist and not), can get you intense colors not typically available in run-of-the-mill colored pencils. You can get a watercolor type marker in these too.

Pens-- Ah, pen and ink... now there's a thought... a dip pen and an array of inks. But then you'd have to clean your pen between colors.... Could be quite a illuminator's experience remiscent of a scriptorium though.
Seriously though, there are a broad variety of gel ink pens in assorted colors out there now. I suppose you could amass a collection of colors and work. I would think pens like these are available to the graphic artists in high-end art supply places too. I wouldn't
recommend ballpoint because the inks tend to clump.

Oil pastels (craypas) -- a kind of softer crayon, but instead of a waxy base, it's oil. It allows for a heavier application of color and you can blend with them. These are blunt-end and not able to be sharpened, so not appropriate for the designs with lots of fine detail. I like these for the color-blending ability.

For just getting started if you don't already have coloring instruments, my recommendation would be to get a  set of fine point markers, they are easier to find than decent colored pencils (which I would like to have now that I've written this).

By all means help yourself to the mandalas, they are really fun, meditative, and calming to work on.  I agree with Niennildi that some good fine point markers are a good tool to use for mandalas.  I will also nominate the humble crayon, which have the added bonus of being able to blend the colors somewhat.  Colored pencils are great for detail, but as Niennildi said, will not be very bold.

Niennildi - I've found that pretty much any set of colored pencils you buy from an art supply store, a craft store, or places like office depot will be of good quality.  If you spend between 5 and 10 dollars, you'll get a good set of 10-12.  If you want the set of every color Iluvatar ever conceived, that'll probably run you up to 30 dollars...the other thing you'll want to invest in is one of those white erasers.  They run about a dollar, and are worth it.

I'm going to take a few of these to the local print shop where I can get them done up on watercolor paper.  Why you ask?  I'm going to try my new watercolor pencils out on them.  The mix of wet and dry pencil could lead to some interesting effects.  If I can finish one and it looks half decent I'll post pics.  These designs are great for folks who like to express themselves with color and shape but don't have the hand-eye coordination.  I'm looking for something to play with lately that's not too serious or expensive (and I'm running a bit low on my jewelry making materials) so this might be a nice and relaxing stand-in. :-)

I find it very relaxing - it's very easy when coloring a mandala to forget about the 'inner chatter' and connect to some place more calm and fun.  I think that as adults, we often forget about the 'zen' of coloring...

I didn't know Print shops had water color paper as an option,  I'll have to look into that.

We  just had the picture of the universe Don made printed directly onto the laminate boarding that they put pics onto for permenant mounting.  Depends on how much you want to pay, and it may take a while to get a print put onto anything other than traditional paper, but it's worth the wait depending on the project.  These people also make decals and print onto canvas-type material for that realistic "it was really painted" on look.

I think the crashing problem is probably gone -- that was with version 1.1.4, and we are at 2.0 RC1-1 now.

I notice that the img tags now have height and width descriptors in them too, at least as an option (to resize the images).

Both are good to know.  I didn't really notice the resize descriptions on the images, but that will probably prove useful.
