Paint prog to capture impressions with

Post by Lúthien »

I've been looking for some time for a program that I can make drawings with. Of course there is the Gimp, a free version of Photoshop (available for all systems), but that is not made to draw with .. you *can* do it, but it is very awkward and it has a steep learning curve. I made my Manwë and Varda drawing with the Gimp.
It is more suited to make website graphics with, or stuff that goes in magazines with lettering and funky graphics etc.

I have made a couple of drawings from meditation impressions that I posted in here with another program called Chocoflop (mac only though)  .. it is a public beta program, and more aimed at drawing. But after the last update it has an annoying bug that makes it unusable. They will probably fix it soon, but I was not too happy with it anyhow .. it is a bit clunky, too.

So I was searching again and now I found a program called Artrage (gallery). There is a windoze version as well.
I was really taken by this thing .. it is a very intuitive program. You can paint, use pastels, pencil, airbrush, whatnot. It has layers and masks. Even the free version is very usable .. it has no layers, and it does not have all tools. But you can paint, and use the pencil and a couple of other things.

I made this version of the main website background in about half an hour with it:

So, Eruannlass, I'll start on the Moon-ship today .. I am curious how it will turn out :)

Oh, my gosh! I love the painterly brushstrokes! Definitely gonna try to play with this.

Thanks for finding this, Luthien! :-*

:) if you check out that gallery forum, they have made some pretty good things with it.
Of course, it never rivals real paint (though it is amazingly close to it!), but it is very usable.

Suilad Melleth!

This looks like an awesome program!  I look forward to seeing the Moon-ship!  Would it be possible for you to email me the link(s) to download this program?  I would like to play around with it myself.
